Two years ago, Shelley stepped in just three days before a concert when the original pianist fell ill. Since then, it has been a genuine joy to have this exceptionally talented musician regularly grace my private concert series. I eagerly anticipate Shelley's evocative, virtuosic, and enchanting performances. Whether in solo or chamber settings, she masterfully brings out the nuances and emotions of each piece. Her thoughtful programming and insightful introductions greatly deepen our appreciation of the music. The concerts consistently lift our spirits, and she has introduced us to other remarkable performers including Andrew Simon, Matteo Tabbia etc. My guests and I deeply appreciate the touching, memorable experiences.

Shelley Ng performed and recorded my solo piano and chamber works in the most recent years.  I was really thrilled by all these performances.  As a contemporary composer, I always need to spend time to discuss with my players since we always seek new sonorities, ideas and new extended techniques. Shelley has a strong sense of contemporary new music.  She is really open-minded and she always accepts new concepts and is willing to work with composers to explore and share new directions.  I am very eager to work with Shelley as every performance she gave me such a great surprise and I feel very satisfied and fulfilled.

Besides offering brilliant and outstanding piano technique, Shelley always provides beautifully tone color, full of imagination, elegant and powerful, passion and affection in her performance and music.  And she is such a young and super talented musician.  I look forward to working with her in the future and making more new and beautiful music.

Mother of Isabelle Cheng (Y9 ESF student), Hong Kong

A  Journey of Music and Inspiration with Ms. Shelley Ng
"As a parent, I'm deeply moved by the positive impact Ms. Shelley Ng has had on my daughter’s musical journey. More than just a piano teacher, she is a true inspiration.
My daughter absolutely adores her lessons. She often says Ms. Shelley is her favourite teacher because she's beautiful inside and out. She never makes my Isabelle feel inadequated; instead, she offers insightful comments that are always framed with genuine encouragement. This fosters a love for learning and a confidence in her own abilities.
What truly impresses me, however, is Ms. Shelley's unwavering dedication to her own artistic expression. She is a gifted performer who inspires young generations to pursue music with passion and depth. We've been fortunate enough to attend several of her performances, and they are truly captivating. It's invaluable for young students to witness firsthand what they can aspire to become – a deeply skilled and passionate artist.
Beyond her performing talents, Ms. Shelley is deeply committed to using her music for good. She frequently performs for charitable causes, and I was particularly touched to see her initiative in organizing a concert to raise funds for the victims of the Turkey earthquake. This demonstrates a remarkable generosity of spirit and a commitment to making a difference in the world.
We feel incredibly fortunate to have Ms. Shelley as Isabelle's piano teacher. She is not only a fantastic teacher but also a remarkable role model for young girls. Any student who has the opportunity to learn from her is truly blessed."

Collaborations

Auditions

Recitals

Collaboration with Shelley is for the ones who are ready to take a leap in their performance. It is for those who look for musicality and ensembleship, and prefer efficiency in rehearsals over repetitions in long rehearsals.

Shelley has performed with world renowned musicians including principals and members of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, Orchestra of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and more. Shelley was a staff pianist for studios of Cho-Liang lin, Norman Fischer, Stephen King at the Rice University's Shepherd School of Music (Master of Music in Piano Chamber Music and Accompaniment) and of Midori Gotō, Margaret Batjer, Pamela Frank and Bing Wang at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music.  She provided chamber music coaching at the Michael P Hammound Preparatory Program at Rice University.

Felix Tham, Violinist, Hong Kong

I have been working with Shelley for over two years; two years of pure and unadulterated joy. She is not only a brilliant pianist but also a deeply sensitive musician and one of the kindest human beings I've had the pleasure of knowing. From the moment you begin working with her, her ability to listen and adapt to your directions is simply remarkable; she pivots instantly to match the every nuance and intent of your music.

As local cellist legend Richard Bamping aptly puts it, "she just gets you." Shelley's intuition and insight into the interpretation of the pieces we worked on together enhanced our performance in ways I could never have anticipated. Playing with her is like stepping into a German supercar. The ride is always reliable yet incredibly thrilling.

Reflecting on my musical journey, I wonder if I may have played my last serious recital at the beginning of this year. And if I have, I am truly honored that it was alongside Shelley. Her artistry and warmth have made a lasting impression on the audience and me and I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you teach? I teach in-person lessons out of my home studio in Mid-levels Hong Kong with a grand piano, in addition to offering virtual lessons via ZOOM and over FaceTime.

How often are lessons/ rehearsals? As often as you like! All lesson times are first-come, first-serve. Most students opt for weekly or twice monthly lessons, while others book a handful in a row if preparing for an upcoming audition or interested in intense study.

Do you teach beginners? Absolutely! I generally work with students ages 12+, but am happy to make exceptions in special cases. Students must be able to read before enrolling.

For how long are lesson packages valid? Packages are valid for 6 months from date of purchase. After this time, any unused lessons will be forfeited. Lessons may be gifted or used by the purchaser.

What do I bring to lessons? Bring any lesson books, or music binders containing music you'd like to work on. A small notebook for writing down assignments, and bottle of water are highly recommended.

What do I do if I need to cancel? Be sure to cancel via WhatsApp or Signal with your calendar day and time reservation with at least 24 hrs notice. Out of respect for studio members that are left unable to book your slot, all no-shows or late-cancels will be charged the lesson fee (unless in the event of a true emergency). Students will be unable to book future lessons until this fee is paid.

What if I want to take both piano lessons and rehearsals? Please leave a note in the comment section of your contact form if you'd like hybrid lessons! I'm happy to cater lessons to what you want to achieve and your goals. I suggest booking a 60 minute slot if this is the case, or select two separate lesson times, so we have ample time to dig into each discipline.

Are lesson books and sheet music included in the price of lessons/ rehearsals? No - Piano students must purchase their own piano lesson books and other instrumentalists or singers must send sheet music at least 2 weeks before the first rehearsal. I am happy to send links to level-appropriate materials to purchase after our initial lesson. I occasionally share PDF scans of music I own, but it is the student's responsibility to ensure their music is printed, 3-hole punched, ideally double-sided (not in plastic sleeves), and organized in a binder or saved in their iPads.
