Dr. Barry Tan, Assistant Professor of Music, Pepperdine University, CA, USA

I had the privilege of hosting Shelley Ng for a piano masterclass at Pepperdine University, and it was an exceptional experience. She engaged the students with vivid imagery that sparked their creativity while also offering clear and detailed instruction on the physical aspects of playing. The results were immediate, as I witnessed noticeable growth in the students’ performances. Their warm and enthusiastic response to Shelley’s artistry and teaching reflected the lasting impact of her masterful playing and inspiring guidance.”

Felix Tham, Violinist, Hong Kong

I have been working with Shelley for over two years; two years of pure and unadulterated joy. She is not only a brilliant pianist but also a deeply sensitive musician and one of the kindest human beings I've had the pleasure of knowing. From the moment you begin working with her, her ability to listen and adapt to your directions is simply remarkable; she pivots instantly to match the every nuance and intent of your music.

As local cellist legend Richard Bamping aptly puts it, "she just gets you." Shelley's intuition and insight into the interpretation of the pieces we worked on together enhanced our performance in ways I could never have anticipated. Playing with her is like stepping into a German supercar. The ride is always reliable yet incredibly thrilling.

Reflecting on my musical journey, I wonder if I may have played my last serious recital at the beginning of this year. And if I have, I am truly honored that it was alongside Shelley. Her artistry and warmth have made a lasting impression on the audience and me and I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Where do you teach? I teach in-person lessons out of my home studio in Mid-levels Hong Kong with a grand piano, in addition to offering virtual lessons via ZOOM and over FaceTime.

How often are lessons/ rehearsals? As often as you like! All lesson times are first-come, first-serve. Most students opt for weekly or twice monthly lessons, while others book a handful in a row if preparing for an upcoming audition or interested in intense study.

Do you teach beginners? Absolutely! I generally work with students ages 12+, but am happy to make exceptions in special cases. Students must be able to read before enrolling.

For how long are lesson packages valid? Packages are valid for 6 months from date of purchase. After this time, any unused lessons will be forfeited. Lessons may be gifted or used by the purchaser.

What do I bring to lessons? Bring any lesson books, or music binders containing music you'd like to work on. A small notebook for writing down assignments, and bottle of water are highly recommended.

What do I do if I need to cancel? Be sure to cancel via WhatsApp or Signal with your calendar day and time reservation with at least 24 hrs notice. Out of respect for studio members that are left unable to book your slot, all no-shows or late-cancels will be charged the lesson fee (unless in the event of a true emergency). Students will be unable to book future lessons until this fee is paid.

What if I want to take both piano lessons and rehearsals? Please leave a note in the comment section of your contact form if you'd like hybrid lessons! I'm happy to cater lessons to what you want to achieve and your goals. I suggest booking a 60 minute slot if this is the case, or select two separate lesson times, so we have ample time to dig into each discipline.

Are lesson books and sheet music included in the price of lessons/ rehearsals? No - Piano students must purchase their own piano lesson books and other instrumentalists or singers must send sheet music at least 2 weeks before the first rehearsal. I am happy to send links to level-appropriate materials to purchase after our initial lesson. I occasionally share PDF scans of music I own, but it is the student's responsibility to ensure their music is printed, 3-hole punched, ideally double-sided (not in plastic sleeves), and organized in a binder or saved in their iPads.
